Grain I

2019

Uyii, Singapore

Grain is a collaborative effort with Liping and Benny Yip from Uyii, a sewing studio based in Singapore.

Part-inspiration came from Mary, Liping & Benny’s trip to Japan, Naoshima Island and Yakushima respectively. With close reference to photographs taken at the natural sites at the beach and forest, Mary extracted patterns to create the textures in the textile mural. She passed the painted textile mural over to Uyii to complete it by sewing the fabrics specially picked out by herself. This mural serves as a gentle reminder to remember that Life is beautiful; take time to smell the roses. Don’t despair for ever cloud has a silver lining.

Mary also drew inspiration from an excerpt from Auguries of Innocence by William Blake.

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Fower
Hold infinity in the palm of your had
And Eternity in an hour.

Man was made for Joy & Woe
And when ths we rightly know
Thro the World we safely go
Joy & Woe are woven fine
A Clothing for the soul divine
Under every grief & pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.
— William Blake

About Uyii

Uyii is a sewing studio based in Sin Ming, Singapore. A singular space serving multiple functions, our studio is where they work to actualise ideas with fabric. Initially launched as a bag label in 2011, they started out designing and hand making their own bags. They have since evolved, using their own knowledge, experience, as well as collaborations with like-minded creatives, to inform the work they do. Today, they work with other creatives to explore the possibilities of fabric, challenge the design/manufacturing binary, and integrate technology and textiles. Fabric is at the centre of everything we do.
